After historic flooding slammed South Carolina the past couple of days, some sort of relief is on the way as drier conditions slowly returns to the area.

The heavy rain, which began late last week, intensified over the weekend bringing over 2 feet of rain to some location in just hours. Coastal flooding and beach erosion became an all too common scene throughout coastal areas, but the biggest threat came in the form of floods that threatened and put many lives and properties at risk. Drivers were constantly caught in a few inches of water that caused their cars to stall and in many cases be swept away forcing for their immediate rescue as conditions continued to worsen.

Drier conditions, which will begin Tuesday, are expected to last through the week allowing not only relief to all those affected but also aiding in the recovery and clean up process as flood victims slowly return to their everyday activities and volunteers help in delivering the necessary aid to those affected.

The next chance for rain will come this weekend as a cold front moves in from the Northwest, however, flooding rain is not to be anticipated.

A good week to all!

Taking a look across the US, a few areas of concern, the first is with the seasons 11th tropical storm located near Bermuda, right now all indications are favoring this storm to keep on a northward track with a gradual re-curve to sea, may see some impacts in the coastal waters from Long Island to Cape Code with higher surf, other than that at this time, the storm center should remain offshore.

The second big item is the cold front pushing towards the Gulf Coast, there will be limited severe weather with this, however it will be a nice rain maker for Wednesday, followed by high pressure for the weekend.

The Northern Plains are dealing with a frontal boundary that will move through over the next 2-3 days bringing multiple rounds of moderate rainfall, with some isolated flooding possible.

The month of September will end with wet weather throughout the Northeastern portion of the country as rain bands make their way across the east due to a cold front that is moving in that direction.

The showers, which are expected to begin arriving on Tuesday, will also be accompanied by cooler air that will force temperatures to drop up to 15 degrees from the previous day. Cities from Minneapolis to Pittsburgh will see the daytime highs on their thermometers flirt with the 60s, digits that haven't been seen since earlier this year. By midweek, these comfortable conditions will be making an appearance from the nation's capital to the Big Apple where the comfortable conditions are forecast to remain through the end of the work week.

Well we continue to see the coastal low off the East Coast bring copious amounts of rainfall to the Mid-Atlantic and parts of the Southeast. This low will continue to impact the region through Sunday.

We are also now focusing on an area of Low pressure beginning to develop over the Yucatan Penn, this feature needs to be watched for possible tropical development as it heads north into the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. Right now latest indications are that it will bring heavy rainfall, high winds and some severe weather along with coastal flooding from New Orleans to Pensacola Florida. You can see more about this and our impact slide by visiting our Forecast Center.

Soggy weather is headed to the southeastern United States later this week as a storm that's currently over the Atlantic Ocean moves into that vicinity with possible tropical characteristics. Areas from the Sunshine State into Virginia will experience an increase in humidity followed by drenching rain, thunderstorms and at times gusty winds.

Along with the heavy downpours and windy conditions, winds are expected to blow from the north which will bring rough surf and rip currents to the east coast beaches from eastern GA to Virginia Beach. Those with plans to attend the beach or partake in boating activities should do so with caution and follow any advise given by local authorities as conditions can become dangerous and the amount of lifeguards on duty diminishes starting this time of the year.

Further north, an area of high pressure is forecast to extend from Philadelphia into New York where thousands of people are expected to gather for mass as Pope Francis visits the country. The possibility for a slight chance of rain will remain for this area of the country depending on how fast, if at all, the high pressure area weakens.

Enjoy your week!

The past few days brought a brief taste of the upcoming fall season as a dip in the jet stream forced daytime temperatures to drop to the 60s with overnight lows decreasing below the freezing point throughout some locations from the Great Lakes into New York and as far south as TN this past weekend.

However, cold weather fans should not rejoice just yet since temperatures will be bouncing back to their normal average this week as the jet stream regresses north allowing for warmer air and high pressure to once again reign over most of the eastern portion of the country. The week will be a nice one for outdoor activities as the high pressure will keep rain and clouds away while bringing lower humidity levels.

The same cannot be said for Florida where an influx of moisture will trigger drenching showers and thunderstorms that promise to increase the risk of flash flooding as the week progresses. The area of high pressure sitting over the mid-Atlantic will force winds to flow out of the northeast for Florida and when combined with an abundance of tropical moisture from the southeast will create the afternoon showers and thunderstorms that are typical of inland and western Florida.

These conditions are expected to continue into the weekend across the Sunshine State where upwards of 2 inches of rain and localized flooding are possible in some locations.

Enjoy your evening,

As we head into the Labor Day Weekend, most of the Central and Eastern United States will continue to experience well above average temperatures. High temperatures on Saturday is expected to reach 5-10 degrees above average in many locations, with 15 degrees above average across the Midwest.

A front will generate scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop across the Northern Plains, as well as the Upper Midwest. Some of the storms could become severe. Temperatures will continue to be very hot with highs in the 90s.

Showers are likely across the Rockies and Intermountain West. Temperatures will start off cool in the 40s and will warm into the 60s for afternoon highs.

Tropical Storm Fred has regained intensity and is expected to remain at tropical storm level through the weekend. As of 11 p.m. AST (EDT), Tropical Storm Fred was located about 1,305 miles southwest of the Azores. Top sustained
winds have increased to 40 mph, and is moving west-northwest at 10
mph. Fred is expected to weaken thanks to a cold front. However, Fred may still impact Azores late next week.

A new tropical system is developing in the far eastern Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center is predicting a 70% chance of tropical formation. We will continue to montior this and will keep you updated.

The unofficial last week of the summer began with flooding downpours that have extended from Florida into the Carolinas as the remnants of Erika along with a non-tropical system continue to track through the southeast.

Flash and urban flooding have been the main hazards affecting the sunshine state where many communities have seen up to 4 inches of rain since this past weekend. Travel delays have also been seen across many airports as some gusty winds and locally strong thunderstorms have also been reported. After being downgraded to a depression, the moisture left from Erika affected the Florida Keys before heading up the coast focusing on the Florida Panhandle and portions of southern Georgia. By Tuesday, whatever remains from this system will head over the Carolinas with improving weather starting midweek.

For the first time in decades, a hurricane has made landfall in the Cape Verde Islands hammering the island chain with heavy downpours and winds of over 80mph as it continues its path to the NW. This storm does not pose a threat to the United States and is expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm Tuesday as it encounters colder waters and strong wind shear which will force the system to dissipate by the end of the week.

Three major hurricanes are simultaneously spinning in the Pacific, two of which are very close to Hawaii but luckily won't threaten the islands. Ignacio and Kilo, both of which have or will be slightly missing the Hawaiian islands, have been downgraded to a category 3 after having been competing with Hurricane Jimena over the weekend all at a category 4. As all three systems continue to make their way into much colder waters, they are expected to begin dying down without harming any land. Rough surf and rip currents will be seen across the Hawaiian Islands.

Taking a look across the US, we see a few items of concern, first the severe weather over the Plains, look for this to continue on Friday with the main threat being straight line wind damage along with some heavy rainfall. The main area of concern will be from Iowa southward into Missouri and over towards Western TN. A few severe storms will also be possible over Kansas and Oklahoma.

Second big issue continues to be the Air Quality from the fires in the west, we will continue to see Air Quality alerts for Friday over a good portion of the Northwest US from Seattle to Boise and into Montana.

Third, stop takes us into the Atlantic Tropics, we have seen a rather quite (El-Nino) style season, however we now are keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Erika as it continues to track west-northwestward through the Lee-ward islands tonight, right now tracks continue to favor a west-northwest to a slightly more northwest turn in the forecast period. This puts Florida in line to possibly be dealing with a tropical early next week, right now intensities are for it to be a strong tropical storm to possibly a CAT 1 hurricane. Right now some key factors still needing to be watched are of course the Bermuda Azores High, the dry air that continues to keep it weaker, and the strong upper level wind shear that is being pushed across courtesy of El-Nino, with all these factors, we will continue to watch later developments, right now if you live from Miami Florida northward into Jacksonville FL or Southeast GA and South Carolina, you need to be preparing yourself for possible tropical impacts early next week.

It will begin to feel less like summer and more like fall for the Great Lakes and Northeast as cooler air descends from Canada this week.

The sweltering upper 80s and lower 90s will begin to disappear as temperatures drop anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees below their average this time of the year with cities from Omaha into Pittsburgh welcoming digits from the upper 60s to the mid 70s along with lower humidity through midweek. Cooler weather, especially during the evening hours, will also be present from DC into Boston with temperatures falling low enough to force people to bring out long sleeve apparel.

As we enter the month of September the cooler air will retreat and a warming trend will ensue as a high pressure system is expected to strengthen and become stationary the jet stream moves further north. Seasonable temperatures are expected to make a comeback from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic and last into the first week in September.

The National Hurricane Center has stopped emitting advisories on what was once Hurricane Danny as it has lost considerable strength becoming a remnant low that is expected to bring much needed rain through many of the Caribbean Islands. However, on the heels of this storm, is what may become the next tropical system. Erika, which can possibly develop by the middle of the week at latest, is still far out over the open waters of the Atlantic but may encounter weak wind shear and enough warm water to develop and reach the Leeward Islands by the second half of the work week.
With the peak of hurricane season approaching, please continue to check back with us as we will keep you posted on all the latest happening in the tropics.

Wet weather will impact the Great Lakes and lower Mississippi Valley as the second half of the week approaches due to a powerful storm system that will produce strong thunderstorms as it makes its way east.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to extend from southern Arkansas into the Great Lakes bringing with it flash flooding and isolated damaging winds that may cause travel delays through many interstates and airports across the nation. This storm system was responsible for over 5 inches of rain through the upper Midwest earlier this week and as it travels eastward it will threaten the eastern and mid-Atlantic states with not only heavy downpours and strong wind gusts but will also bring a dip in temperatures by the end of the work week with digits hovering in the 60s and 70s for a couple of days.

Far out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Danny is making a name for itself potentially becoming the first hurricane of the season. Currently moving westward at 50mph, this system is being watched closely as atmospheric conditions can become favorable as the week progresses. The exact track of this storm is not yet clear, however, many islands in the Caribbean have been experiencing extreme drought the past couple of months and can benefit from any rain Danny would produce.

Well the wet weather associated with the strong cold front moving through the Plains, will advance eastward into the Upper MS River valley bringing widespread rains, possible flash flooding as well. Behind this front we are seeing some very cool air with overnight lows falling into the lower 50's and a few upper 40's across North Dakota. This is just the teaser to the event on tap for the end of the month.

We are also watching an Invest in the Atlantic for possible tropical development in the coming days as it continues tracking west-northwestward towards the Central Atlantic. This system bears watching as it continues to develop in the coming days.

A few International headlines to end the evening.

A tornado was reported in the Yokohama Japan area, causing minor damage to buildings in the area. We are also watching two very potent Typhoons that are tracking across the Western Pacific, as they are going to bear down on Taiwan and Japan early next week. These typhoons will also have some extreme weather impacts in the United States around the end of the month, as they rise up into the Arctic and drop back down along the Polar Front Jet, could create some very cold air over portions of the Northern Plains, we will need to watch this for possible light frost across North Dakota and Northern Montana and the Arrowhead of Minnesota.

As you get ready to start the weekend off, here are a few weather factors to be looking at. First, the heat is going to be very intense over the majority of the Southern US and extending into the Plains, with temps soaring into the upper 90's and lower 100's. Expect to see plenty of heat advisories and Excessive Heat warnings for this weekend.

Second is the tropical that is making its way across the Eastern Pacific towards the Hawaiian Island chain, this looks to remain at a minimal hurricane, but needs to be watched closely by residents in Hawaii.

Third is the severe weather, we are watching two places closely, the first is near the frontal boundary over the Plains and Great Lakes, this could be a favorable spot to see large scale thunderstorm events fire each day, due to the contrast in air masses. The second is along the Southeast and portions of the Gulf Coast, these will also be mainly generated by the daytime heating.

An influx of moisture brought heavy rain and flooding to portions of central Florida earlier this week and next on the list for local floods and gusty storms will be the Missouri Valley and the Mid-Atlantic area as a storm system makes its way across the region.

Rain gear will be put to good use from Knoxville into parts of the Virginia's on Thursday with heavy downpours capable of producing flash flooding and winds in excess of 60mph that may lead to travel delays as well as the downed trees and power lines that may leave hundreds of thousands without power. The heaviest of rain along with the highest threat of flooding will mostly concentrate in the South, however, the system will spread across the nation's capital and the city of brotherly love by Thursday evening and linger into Friday.

By Friday afternoon, the system will have moved out of the Mid-Atlantic area taking a turn further north bringing rough surf to the Atlantic beaches and possibly spoiling outdoor plans for those throughout New England.

Tropical Storm Guillermo will travel very close to the Hawaiian Island Thursday evening as it continues to weaken on its track north into the colder waters of the Pacific. Despite the islands will not be experiencing a direct hit from the storm, soaking showers and damaging winds will still be present with flash flooding and strong rip currents being the main threats to those living or traveling to these areas.

As we approach the weekend, Guillermo will move further away from Hawaii allowing for a more typical weather pattern, however, another area of low pressure may become the next tropical system of the eastern Pacific possibly affecting the Hawaiian Islands by the end of the following work week.

A safe week to all!

The month of August began on a very soggy note for portions of the sunshine state as a front stalled over the central portion of the state dumping quite a few inches of rain in just a few hours.

Rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms slammed parts of central Florida, more specifically Tampa, forcing the closure of dozens of roads and leading authorities to hand out free sand bags to residents. 4 inches of rain were reported on Sunday with another 2 inches falling this morning and up to 2 more inches possible through Tuesday before the area of disturbed weather begins to move north bringing some sort of relief that will last until the end of the work week. .

The picture below shows the magnitude of the flooding that has been affecting the Tampa area today.

Unfortunately, another front is expected to develop and become stationary over the area once again this weekend bringing more unneeded rain and flooding concerns to the region. Those living in or around the area should take the necessary precautions to stay safe.

Those in the Hawaiian Islands will also want to take precautions and be vigilant as the week progresses as Tropical Storm Guillermo sets aim on Hawaii.

Guillermo, which is not expected to strengthen any further, will travel very close to Hawaii on Wednesday bringing with it heavy rainfall, gusty winds and dangerous swells and rip currents that will pose a hazard to those living and traveling in the islands. As the weekend approaches, this system will begin to weaken as it interacts with the colder waters of the Pacific.

Wishing everyone a safe week!
A weak stationary front will trigger numerous showers and thunderstorms across the central Gulf Coast and Florida today. Flash flooding will be possible across southern Georgia and north-central Florida. Temperatures will top out 80s in Florida to 90s and 100 degrees acoss most of the Deep South.

Warm and dry weather is expected across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast with most locations topping out in the 80s.

It will be another hot day with high temperatures in the 90s and 100s across the Central and Southern Plains. The Northern Plains will be more comfortable with highs in the 80s.

A wave of low pressure will bring a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms across the Midwest. The main threats will be large hail and damaging winds. The tornado threat is low.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop over the Four Corners. Some of the thunderstorms will produce heavy rainfall and flash flooding. 1 to 2 inches of rainfall will be possible.

Hot and dry weather is expected for northern California, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. High temperatures will reach into the upper 90s.

In the Central Pacific, Hurricane Guillermo is still a category 2 storm with winds of 105mph. Guillermo is moving WNW at 12MPH. Guillermo will remain over open waters towards Hawii over the next several days. However, Guillermo will weaken due to cooler water and unfavorable upper-level winds. Guillermo will weaken to a tropical storm by the time it arrives in Hawaii.

Conditions are quiet across the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and the North Atlantic. Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next several days.

Enjoy your Sunday!

The sunshine state has not been living up to its moniker that past few days as heavy showers and thunderstorms have become a nuisance through most of the state and are expected to continue for a couple more days.

An area of clouds and showers off the west coast of Florida has been responsible for the almost 6 inches of rain some location received and the atmosphere is expected to remain unstable near Tampa, FL. bringing more downpours that will definitely increase the risk of flooding. The bulk of these storms is expected to take aim at the west and central portions of the state, but at times however, will extend along the Atlantic coast from Jacksonville into parts of southern FL.

Those living or visiting Florida shouldn't discard the possibility of poor visibility and flash flooding both of which may lead to travel delays. Anyone with plans of spending time at any of the amusement parks should be prepared and plan accordingly. This slow moving storm system along with an associated stalled front near the area will continue to bring daily showers and thunderstorms through nearly the end of the month.

July may not end too quiet for Florida, but it will be a different story throughout the Atlantic as no tropical cyclone development is expected during the next few days.

Enjoy your evening,

Well as you get ready for your Wednesday, here are the weather events on tap.

#1 Heat Continues: The Southeast US, Gulf Coast and portions of the Mid-Atlantic will be dealing with temps in the upper 90's and heat index values near 110F.

#2 Heat begins to return to the Plains as well, with places in Nebraska approaching the upper 90's, while South Dakota should stay just south of the 90's and be in a more 84-88F range.

#3 Rainy Southwest will continue as the monsoon starts to make a name for itself, expect to see more heavy rainfall over the region.

The week started off soggy for the mid-Mississippi Valley as well as the Southern Plains as a front tracks south into the Midwest.

Damaging winds and flash flooding will possible through this evening extending from the Texas Panhandle into Louisville, KY with some storms becoming severe at times as a combination of high temperatures and humidity become the main weather ingredients through the evening. Torrential downpours will make an appearance Tuesday into Wednesday across parts of the Southern Plains bringing a risk of flash flooding as a front stalls over the Tennessee Valley.

In the tropics, all remains quiet and no storms are expected to develop within the next several days, however, the front stalling over Tenn. will also hover over the Gulf as we close off the month of July highly favoring the development of storms over the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Experts expect up to two storms to develop from these conditions with either system possibly bringing torrential rainfall along with rough surf and strong rip currents to the Southeastern coast.

Severe thunderstorms are developing across the Central Plains this evening. A tornado watch has been issued for northeast Kansas until Midnight. As of 9pm CDT, strong to severe super cells are firing across northeast Kansas and southeast Nebraska. These storms are producing large hail and winds in excess of 70mph. The main threats will be large hail, damanging winds and isolated tornadoes.

Strong thunderstorms are also developing across North Dakota and Minnesota this evening. A few of those storms may produce large hail and damaging winds. However, these storms are not as intense as the storms across Kansas and Nebraska.

It was another hot day across the South. A heat advisory is in effect for several locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and northern Louisiana. Most of the heat advisories are in effect through Friday.

The tropics remain active across the East Pacific. Hurricane Dolores is currently a Cat 3 with winds of 125mph with gusts to 155mph. Dolores will continue to weaken as it moves WNW at 5mph. Dolores will weaken to a tropical storm by Saturday afternoon. Tropical Storm Enrique has winds of 40mph with gusts to 50mph and will continue to weaken as it moves WNW at 8mph.

Taking a look across the country, here are the few extreme events in store for today.

1. Heat, will be the dominant weather feature over the Southeast US and Gulf Coast, with many places seeing high temps in the 94-99F range along with Heat Index values in the 104-112F range, if you are living in these places take it easy and make sure to drink plenty of water and take breaks inside if possible.

2. Severe Weather: The next round of severe weather will start to take shape later this afternoon over the Northern Plains. The main threat at this time looks to be straight line winds along with periods of heavy rainfall.

On the other side of the country we have

"Super Typhoon Nangaka which is currently south of Japan and moving towards Japan, the forecasted landfall of this dangerous typhoon is between Northeast Kyushu and Shikoku Islands, when making landfall the major impacts will be the very strong winds and of course coastal flooding and storm surge.. If you live in this region please prepare and be ready... Right now it looks like landfall will take place late Wednesday night or early Thursday Japan standard time.

Severe thunderstorms will rumble across portions of the eastern United States through the middle of the week as part of a system that was also responsible for an outbreak in severe weather in the Midwest this past weekend.

Strong, and at times severe, thunderstorms made their way across parts of Chicago, Michigan and Indiana bringing with it flash flooding, tornadoes and strong wind gust which forcing officials to delay or cancel hundreds of flight out of O'Hare International airport in Chicago Monday morning. The system will continue to track east reaching Alabama and Virginia on Tuesday bringing with it rapidly moving storms with the potential of becoming severe at times.

Cities from Atlanta, GA into Richmond, VA may experience the full spectrum of severe weather as damaging winds along with flash flooding and excessive lightning menace the region all day Tuesday. The possibility of an isolated tornado or two cannot be discarded as well as winds exceeding 60mph. Downed trees and power lines should not come as a surprise to many, therefore, those living in or around these areas should properly prepare. A repeat is expected Wednesday, albeit, not as strong as the storms on Tuesday.

The Atlantic has given birth to its 3rd name storm of the season. Claudette, which formed over the Gulf stream waters on Monday, is located far enough to not affect the U.S., however, rough surf will be possible for the beaches extending from the mid-Atlantic New England as the week progresses. Currently categorized as a tropical storm, Claudette is expected to grow stronger as it moves further north where it will encounter the colder waters off Nova Scotia and gradually weaken before possibly making landfall over Canada.

A safe week to all!
Good Morning,

Another fun filled weather day in store from Texas to the Great Lakes. We are watching a large area of heavy rainfall along a frontal boundary that will impact this region with flash flooding and heavy rain totals of 3-7inches very likely through this region. Another storm system moving through the Western US will bring some much needed rainfall to Northern CA, however it will come fast, causing flash flooding as well.

Heat is building up for a Summer bash, over the next few days we will be watching the mercury soar over the Plains with many places heading into the 100's for the first time this summer, this heat will last for 2-5 days as well, so its going to be a long duration event, that will have impact on agriculture and also ranching. The Southeast and Gulf Coast will continue to be dominated by high pressure again today, keeping most rainfall away and allowing for temps to hit the mid 90's and heat index values soaring over 105F.

The work week began with a threat of severe weather across the Plains that delivered damaging winds and heavy rain along with possible sightings of tornadoes as a slow moving cold front extends from southern Texas into Illinois.

The system, which will continue to track east, will bring flooding rain and travel delays from the Texas Panhandle into parts of Missouri on Tuesday with the threat for severe weather remaining as the cold front advances east into the Ohio Valley.

By the middle of the week, soggy weather will make a comeback across the Northeast as the same system moving across the Plains reaches the area.

Intense thunderstorms are forecast to take aim from the eastern Great Lakes into portions of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York with heavy downpours and gusty winds. Those from NYC to Vermont might want to keep their umbrellas and rain coats handy as showers and thunderstorms will become an inconvenience throughout these cities and although severe thunderstorms are not expected, delays in the afternoon commute should not be discarded.

As we end the work week, drier conditions are in store for the Northeast.

Fireworks display across portions of the South and the Plains may not be lighting up the skies this evening as severe thunderstorms threaten to rumble through these areas.

The risk of severe thunderstorms is expected to extend from the Texas panhandle north into parts of Canada, however, the most damaging weather is due to affect Nebraska and the Dakotas with golf size hail, winds over 60 mph and strong downpours that will have those with outdoor celebration plans keeping an eye on the sky for rapidly changing conditions.

Further down south, storms are not expected to be as severe as the ones moving across the Plains, but people should still take precautions as lightning cannot be discarded. Sadly, 11 individuals have died so far this year due to lightning strikes, therefore, for those who plan to watch or light up fireworks this year, seeking shelter is a must as soon as they hear thunder or see lightning.

The Plains and South will continue to see showers and thunderstorms the second half of the holiday weekend with severe weather menacing from Nebraska to Minnesota mainly during the afternoon hours bringing a higher threat of severe weather along with possible tornadoes.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy 4th of July!
