Extreme Weather for Nov 11

Good evening,

Hundreds of thousands of people are being slammed by a powerful winter storm that is moving across the northern Plains and upper Great Lakes with blinding snow, gusty winds and freezing temperatures all of which are due to disrupts travel activities in and around these regions.

Shovels and plows will be put to good use from Wisconsin into Michigan where upwards of 12 inches of snow are expected to be picked up through Tuesday evening. Roads and highways in and out of the affected areas will be coated with snow that when combined with the 20 to 40 mph wind gusts that are expected will make for dangerous travel conditions due to reduced visibility. Sadly, the first day of the work week saw hundreds of vehicle related accidents one of which included a fatal collision. Those who are in the necessity of having to commute are asked to do so with caution as road conditions will go from wet and slushy to covered in snow and ice.

As the system moves further away from these areas, the stage will be set for arctic air to plunge down from Canada as the polar vortex moves further down south. Temperatures are expected to fall at near to below zero through the upper Midwest with many of the lower 48 states feeling the bitter cold as well. Portions of Texas, for example, had temperatures topping the mid 70s Monday afternoon, but by Tuesday however, temperatures are not expected to surpass the low 40s and for those living in the upper Midwest, temperatures will remain below the freezing mark through the remainder of the week.

A safe and happy Veteran's Day!
