Good evening,
Severe weather has been a nuisance to portions of the
nation, mainly from northern Texas into the Ohio Valley.
Lines of severe thunderstorms accompanied by large hail,
heavy downpours and a few tornadoes have rumbled through parts of Alabama and
Illinois today and a repeat of the same is expected through the evening and
into Tuesday extending from Indianapolis to Tennessee and down south to Alabama
and New Orleans. Several injuries have been reported in Arkansas along with the
untimely death of a father of three as storms swept through that and various
other states damaging building and leaving thousands without electricity.
The widespread outbreak of severe weather is expected to
move further east this evening extending from the Great Lakes south into the
Gulf of Mexico with a diminishing threat of tornadoes, however, the risk of
flooding downpours will remain elevated as we move forward on Tuesday.
Tropics:
After what has been a relatively quiet season and with a
little over a month left before finalizing, things seem to be heating up in the
Atlantic. After churning in the Caribbean Sea as a tropical storm, Gonzalo
officially became a category 1 hurricane earlier this afternoon as it moved
across the northern portion of the Leeward Islands. Currently moving northwest
at 12 mph, Gonzalo has maximum sustained winds of 80 mph as it comes
dangerously close to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Hurricane watches and warnings have been placed from the
British Virgin Islands into Puerto Rico with flash flooding, gusty winds, mudslides
and power outages becoming the biggest threat to these areas through Tuesday
before a cold front forces Gonzalo to take a more northerly turn by the middle
of the week.
Enjoy your evening,
Jen Gonzalez
