Extreme Weather for Aug 8

Good evening,

Showers and thunderstorms will be making their way through portions of the Central Plains as a low pressure system moves out of the region and into the Tennessee Valley. These storms, which have the potential to at times be heavy, are forecast to extend from Iowa into portions of Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, and Kentucky as well as Alabama and Mississippi increasing flooding probabilities through these areas.

Some of the storms have the potential to produce blinding downpours causing up to 2 inches of rain in a few hours as well as travel delays due to poor visibility. As we approach the end of the work week, the heaviest showers will move into Kentucky and Tennessee and spread from the northern Plains into northern Florida.

Tropics:

All remains quiet in the Atlantic basin, but that’s far from being the story for the Pacific Ocean. Two major systems are currently spinning westward, both eyeing the islands of Hawaii mere days apart from one another. The weaker system, Hurricane Iselle, is located about 150 miles ESE of Hilo, HI as it continues to move WNW at 17 mph with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings have been emitted for several islands and those with interest in Hawaii should monitor the situation closely.

The Second system, Hurricane Julio, is further away from Hawaii but is currently stronger than Iselle with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph as it tracks west at 17 mph. No watches or warning are in effect and Julio is forecast to encounter cooler waters and weaken to a tropical system before reaching Hawaii this weekend.

Enjoy your evening,

Jen Gonzalez
