Good afternoon,
It was a dark Thanksgiving for hundreds of thousands as a
powerful winter storm wreaked havoc through the northeastern portion of the
country leaving a staggering amount of people without power.
Over 300,000 individuals were left in the dark as the storm
made its way up the eastern coast and by Friday afternoon, 90,000 remained with
no electricity in New Hampshire alone. All of these power outages were due to
heavy snow accumulating on tree limbs and power lines or to downed utility
poles caused by car accidents. Repairs have been underway on this black Friday,
however, widespread storm damage coupled with the remaining snow have lead to
difficult travel conditions for utility crews who are asking those affected to
be patient as restoration can take longer than expected.
The weekend will bring drier and milder weather to this
region, however, the refreezing of melting snow will become a major concern as
roads can become icy providing for hazardous driving conditions as many prepare
to head back home.
Out west, umbrellas and snow boots will be given good usage this
weekend as a system bringing heavy rain and snow makes its way through most of
the Pacific NW. Heavy rain is expected to extend from northern California into
Washington with snow and plummeting temperatures forecast from the Washington
Cascades into portions of the northern Rockies.
Travel conditions around these areas can also become dangerous therefore
those commuting on roads out in the northwest should drive with caution as
whiteouts and rapid freeze ups along with strong winds will be possible through
Saturday evening.
Wishing everyone a safe holiday weekend!
