Good evening,
The tropics are heating up early! With less than 1 month to go for the start of hurricane season what can potentially become the first system of the Atlantic basin may be brewing and taking shape as the week progresses.
It is currently a small area of showers and thunderstorms off the eastern coast of southern Florida but experts at the National Hurricane Center forecast on it gathering enough strength for it to become a tropical system by the end of the week. The system, which has the potential of becoming the first named storm of the 2015 hurricane season, will bring breezy conditions with strong winds and surf through the eastern coast from southern FL into VA. Beach-goers are being asked to be on high alert and take all necessary precautions when out in the water, especially after the untimely death of a Florida tourist this past weekend.
Along with wind gusts that may at time reach or exceed 40 mph, heavy rain along with thunderstorms may lead to localized flash flooding and building seas will be of concern for boating, fishing and shipping interests. As the week progresses, the system is expected to track north bringing with it the same rough seas, heavy rain and gusty conditions to the coast from Georgia into North Carolina or Virginia.
Wishing everyone a safe week!
Jen Gonzalez
